The cultural history of Pend Oreille County dates back centuries. The river valley is the ancestral homeland of the Kalispel Tribe and the Kalispel Indian Reservation is located there. Various ethnic groups have also been drawn to the county, such as Chinese placer miners who worked riverbanks in search of gold. Over time, Pend Oreille County communities developed unique cultures of their own, centered on river life, the arts, and the Selkirk Mountain landscape.
